The new Lionel Watts Playground

I was in two minds about visiting the new Lionel Watts Playground. I have really lovely memories of visiting the old playground with my kids when they were little. But we finally got around to visiting it.

I’m not sure how I feel about this playground. The old one was so lovely, with mostly wooden structures, lots of plants and bushes and very natural. This playground is very open and metal in comparison. However, it is an upgrade no doubt. My kids loved it!

There is a lot more equipment, more space and a lot more capacity for more kids and families. I suppose by taking out all the trees they were able to make the space it now has.

What I will say about this playground and a lot of the new playgrounds we are seeing in Sydney is that they are more accessible which is fantastic. A lot of newer playgrounds are level surfaces which makes a massive difference. They also incorporate more elements of play that can be used by all kids.

This playground is very similar in design to the Collaroy Beach Playground. But with not as many little features. This playground does have more space though.

Features of the New Lionel Watts Playground

The new Lionel Watts Playground has multiple separate play areas widely spaces from one another. The flying fox takes up one of these areas while a big deck structure with slides takes up another. There is no designated smaller kids play area unlike the new St Ives Showground Playground.

The flying foxes

The flying fox is one of the big features of the new playground. It’s a double one that goes off from a platform. It’s great that the kids don’t have to climb up a platform like they do at Flying Fox in Mona Vale.

Next to the double Flying Fox is a smaller all access Flying Fox. It’s absolutely brilliant.

The MOST amazing swing

The other attraction for this playground must be the smartest swing I’ve ever seen. It is a dual swing with a baby sit facing a small seat. The two are joined by a metal piece at the top so the swing seats stay the same space apart. What I would have given to have this 4 years ago. What genius worked this out must be applauded by all mums who have a baby and toddler who wants to swing. It’s so so smart!!

There are six additional swings alongside one another. Thankfully they are all under shade.

Look at this amazing swing, look closely at its genuis. It can fit a baby and a toddler at the same time. You can find it at the new Lionel Watts Playground

The weird structure

I’m putting this next structure down as a feature because my kids loved it and it takes up a big amount of space. It’s really hard to explain though.

Essentially it is a big square deck with three slides (and stairs) coming off it. In the middle is a short net to climb up from ground level. Underneath then makes for a covered play area. This structure is all under shade so it’s an ideal place for the kids to play but it’s very limited in design. I think it could have more added to it but maybe it’s good for imagination skills…

Music & Noise-makers

What I do like about the new Lionel Watts Playground is how they have incorporated a lot of playground musical instruments. In one corner of the playground they have those speakers to shout through, wind chimes, drums and musical boxes. It’s a really lovely lovely area. This is probably the best area for little ones but it is not under shade.

There is even a little drum built into the climbing dome.

What else?

Just at the entrance is a small area with fake logs. There are ropes and stumps all for balancing and playing on and with. It’s a lot like those fake logs at Collaroy Beach Playground.

There is another area with monkey bars and a metal climbing dome. You don’t really see many monkey bars in the new playgrounds so my 8 year old was delighted.

Facilities at the New Lionel Watts Playground

The whole playground is flat with wide walkways so it’s very accessible. I love that.

The entire playground is fenced which is great.

I also love that there is a double entrance so kids would have to get through two sets of gates before getting into the car park.

Bathrooms & Bubblers

There is a bathroom block inside the fences which is good. The accessible bathroom has a changing set up too.

There are two bubblers, one at the bathroom and another in the middle of the playground.

Shade

From photos it looks like there is almost no shade but it is actually better than it looks.

There is a big rotanda in the middle with benching in a circle that is under shade and there are shade sails over the swings and the wooden deck playground.

Picnic tables and BBQs

There are two picnic tables just off the playground which would make for a great birthday party spot. It’s under a shade sail thankfully.

It doesn’t appear that there are any barbecues.

Food & Coffee Truck

When we visited (January 2021) there was a food truck in the parking lot. It serves coffee, no decaf though, drinks, ice creams and light meals. I saw them advertising chicken pops and chips.

The other option is a quick trip to the grocery store close by. Or even Mrs Jones the Baker for a quick pit stop. My kids go mental for her sausage rolls.

Parking

There is a lot of parking on site.

One of the big positives of the new playground is how the surrounding area has been revamped. The parking area and pathways are so much better.

A video of the playground

I’ve posted a video of the playground on the AllThingsMom Facebook page. You can check it out HERE.

I apologise for the speed of the video in the beginning and the format!

Where is the New Lionel Watts Playground

The playground is in French’s Forest. It’s on the same road as Glen Street Theatre but in Blackbutts.

The official address of Lionel Watts Playground is Lionel Watts Park, Blackbutts Road, Frenchs Forest, 2086. But that is quite a long road so keep a lookout for the oval. The playground is between Pringle Avenue and Lockwood Avenue.

If you hit the big square with the Glen Street Theater and Glen Street Library – you have gone too far.

Tips for visiting the new Lionel Watts Playground

1. If you’re visiting in school holidays or on the weekends go in the afternoons. That way you will be able to get some additional shade from the trees.

2. Take something to sit on if you’re visiting with little kids. There is not much grass and it’s mostly cement.

3. Hats and sun cream are essential.

4. Bring bikes or scooters and you can take a lap around the oval.

And, if you’re in the area and wanting something else to do, beyond the playground. The Glen Street Library is lovely!
