The Incredibles 2 – great for kids older than 5!

The Incredibles 2

I loved The Incredibles 2, who cares what the kids thought. Just kidding, of course I care about their opinions. They enjoyed it so much I’ve had to watch the first Incredibles movie every afternoon for the last week. That or Jack-Jack attack that is on FOXTEL at the moment. If you haven’t seen either, at least see Incredibles (1) or The Incredibles 2 may not make sense.

If you’re thinking about going to see The Incredibles 2, you should be aware of the age suitability in relation to the “scariness” of the movie. You must also be careful about the imagery.

Our daughter has decided she’s Violent, mom is Elastagirl, her brother is dash and granny is Edna. Poor dad, she told him he’s not Mr Incredible, he’s just Bob (that’s Mr Incredible’s not-superhero name).

The Incredibles 2 – great for kids older than 5!

The movie has all the old favourites in – Mr Incredible, Elastagirl, Frozo and of course Edna!

The Incredibles 2 starts straight after the end of Incredibles 1. You know at the end of that movie the family is on the way home when they hear the Mole Man tunneling through the city. (I know his name isn’t Mole Man – my son keeps telling me but I can never remember his actual name).

So at the beginning of this movie, Tony who is class with Violet is getting interrogated. He’s the boy she is desperate to go on a date with.  He relays a story of going to a movie when a villain causes destruction in the city. The incredibles of course come to the rescue even though being a “Super” still illegal.

The mole looking baddie then breaks into a bank and then tries to blow up the whole city. This is just the beginning. The movie has nothing to do with mole man really so I’m not giving anything away.

The plot (without spoilers)

As I said about the movie is shot in a time when the Supers are still illegal. The family, after the mole man incident, is approached by a wealthy businessman who wants to make Supers legal. His great idea is to use a “go pro” like device so film one of the Supers in the process of saving people so that everyone can see how much work Supers do and how important they are.

The wealthy businessman tells Mr Incredible that he thinks it best that Elastagirl be the one who is filmed because she doesn’t wreck as much havoc in saving people. Poor Mr Incredible is very put out at having to be the “stay home dad”.

The movie follows how this businessman and Elstagirl make Supers publicly supported. But then, as per usual, a baddie gets involved – the Screenslayer. Mr Incredible and all three kids have to come to the rescue.

Scary scenes

It is very scary when elastigirl comes across Screenslayer. There is a scene when she arrives as his apartment and fights him. It’s scary enough to freak me out.

When Elastigirl is nabbed by the baddies, I jumped out of my skin. I don’t know what my kids felt.
Towards the end of the movie, a whole group of super heroes are used for ulterior purposes to try and hurt the kids. It’s really scary how these adult super heroes go after the kids.

For the stay home parents

Watching Mr Incredible take on the duties of the stay home parent is hilarious. I was literally laughing out loud! He so desperately wants to portray the image of doing fine but he is struggling!

Age suitability

This movie suits kids 5.5 and older. If you’re child is sensitive to scary scenes, loud noises and the like then it’s a no-go.

My five year old was enthralled and loved the movie. Miss Roo who is 3.5 was a little scared. Throughout portions the movie she sat on her dad’s lap trying with his hands over her eyes.

There are also two warnings below.

Warning Number 1

There are a a lot of scenes with flashing imagery.  You must avoid this movie if you are an epileptic or have migraines started by flashing images.
There really should have been a disclaimer to this effect on the movie.

Warning Number 2

Beware, in Sydney, the movie started with this strange story. Starts with a woman having a nightmare that she ate her baby that was a dumpling. It is very very strange and actually has nothing to do with the movie.
