The Best Mosman Cafes For Kids

The Best Mosman Cafes For Kids

Mosman is such a beautiful suburb and it has so many stunning little cafes, smart restaurants and boutique shops. The views of the city and the harbour are just breathtaking. But those are the things that draw the more mature people in our audience. For me,  if I’m going to Mosman, I’m going to meet friends with kids or I’m on route to Taronga.

And while there are such lovely places to eat, not a lot of these are kid friendly. Even the ones pretending to be are not necessarily very good. They’re either too small or too cramped.

After spending a year going to Mosman every Wednesday with my daughter I’m going to share with you our version of the Best Mosman Cafes for Kids. These are in no particular order except for the first which is Frenchy’s. We love Frenchy’s and even just spent a morning there last week when it was raining.

Just be warned that on the weekends these venues do busy. It may be best to book a table in advance.

1. Frenchy’s Café

Out of all the cafes this is number one of the Best Mosman Cafes for Kids.

The café is small yes but there is an outside area with outside seating and a space with some toys set out for the kid to play. There is also a grassy area in front for the kids to run around and its set in a reserve where they can play and scoot after you’ve eaten.

The café also has some cool little decorations for the kids to discover.

My only concern with Frenchy’s would be the proximity to the road and the fact that there is nothing to stop the kids running close to the road inside the reserve. While they would have to make quite a run for it you will need to keep your eyes open.

The food is very French and absolutely delicious and they have good babychino’s and offerings for the kids.

You can find Frenchy’s at 3 Read Road, Mosman. It is just after Middle Harbour Road and is the road on your right after the entrance to Gunner’s Barracks.

Tip for your visit: If you’re there on a sunny day, take the scooters. And, if you’re there on a rainy day, take umbrellas and gum boots because the cobbles make for a great puddles.

2. Balmoral Boathouse

The Boathouses around Sydney are always beautiful. They have such great locations – Shelly Beach in Manly and Palm Beach. I love taking out of town guests to them. Balmoral Boathouse in Mosman is no different. Beautiful location, good food and everything you expect from one of the Boathouses.

Now, Boathouse Balmoral itself is not designed for kids, it does have a kids menu, baby chinos, baby chairs and lots of space. You can easily manoeuvre around with kids inside. Out of these four Best Mosman Cafes for Kids this is definitely the biggest space.

What the Boathouse Balmoral has going for it is that it is right next door to the Balmoral Playground and you can do an easy walk along the beach with a pram and scooters.  There is also an enclosed swimming area right next door. I’ve actually written on the walk that you can do along the beach and it has some good ideas on parking so have a read of that if you’re heading over to Balmoral Beach.

Tip for visiting: Go around the back to the kitchen door and see if the resident pelican is visiting.

You can find the Boathouse Balmoral at 2 The Esplanade, Mosman.

3. Fourth Village

This may seem like an unlikely choice but I love Fourth Village. The food is so good as is the service and while it is an adult restaurant, the location is great for a cooler day.

If you sit outside there is a wide courtyard that serves as a big pedestrian walkway and it has a fountain in the centre of it. My daughter has spent hours playing in that big open space and looking into the fountain. You can sit outside and leave the kids to roam.

There is also a big area of green grass but it’s down some steep steps so best to watch the kids and go with them if they want to explore.

You can find Fourth Village at 5A Vista St, Mosman.

Top tip: if you’ve never been to Fourth, it can be a bit hard to find. Aim for the mosman library parking and then walk across the grass heading away from the Alan Border Oval. When you see the fountain you will see Fourth.

4. Plonk

I do love Plonk on a beautiful day. The only problem is that if that beautiful day is on a weekend, you will most likely need a booking to get a good seat.

Plonk is situated right on the water alongside Spit Bridge. I was initially worried that the water would be dirty from all the boats that dock in the area but my kids were fine playing in the water and came out clean albeit sopping wet.

At Plonk you can sit outside under the shade cover and watch your kids playing on the sand right alongside you.

One of the problems with Plonk is parking. You have to park on that small strip of parkings next to Spit Bridge, the parkings on either side of Spit Reserve.

Tip for your visit: Take a spare pair of clothes and some buckets and spades.

If you have any other Mosman Cafes that are great for kids, please let me know, I will definitely visit it and report back.
