How is it calculated?
The average salary of a stay home mum is calculated on all the jobs and functions they perform and what it would cost to employ someone to do that.
They’ve analysed eight ‘jobs’ that are embraced when one enters the world of parenting. This includes:
- cooking,
- cleaning,
- taxi-ing,
- caring,
- nursing,
- organising,
- educating and
- emotional supporting.
What it doesn’t take into account
The average salary of a Stay Home Mum doesn’t take into account school engagements like attending reading groups or being the canteen person, birthday parties and the random things that take up so much of our time that we just can’t account for like baking for your child’s birthday celebration at school. It’s the things that you couldn’t pay someone to do because it would be the strangest job description in the world.
It also doesn’t take into account any pet care that is needed at home. Walks, feeding, hanging out with the needy cat. Or is that just us?
With these eight roles taken on by a mother or father, the potential average salary for a stay home mum has been calculated.

The average salary for a stay home mum in Sydney and Melbourne exceeds $500 000 per annum.
In Sydney, the average salary for a stay home mum could be as much as $534,470.40 per annum, whereas in Melbourne this salary could be around $503,328.00.

Where the figures come from
To get a better break down of the salary differences by location, a chef in North Shore averages $36.67 an hour. The pay rate for chefs in Cairns is $26.03.
Where might it be worth locating to for the salary benefits of being the family cook in your household?
A nurse in Newcastle makes $40.75 an hour whereas St Ives nurses and carers make $31.17. In North Sydney it’s $28.79 an hour.
Interestingly, a psychologist in Wagga Wagga earns $38.14 versus Brunswick $44.61, or in Campbelltown where specialists take home $96.09 an hour!
Based on my own experiences of when I was working, there were so many different services we needed to outsource from the cleaning to the meal delivery service, the laundry and the ironing and then the day care fees or the child minder on top of it all. I think it was that latter expense that just doubled the figure almost.
