Recommended Movies for Younger Kids

Movies for Younger Kids

It’s hard to find suitable movies for younger kids. I’m hoping that this list of recommended movies for young kids makes it a little easier to find thing that you’re happy letting your child watch.

Despite my daughter’s unwavering love of Frozen, I actually haven’t included it in this list. I just can’t bring myself to write about something I watch weekly.

There aren’t a lot of movies on the list because we hardly ever agree.

My kids are currently 6 and 4 and I’ve been putting this list together since they were 4 and 2.  My eldest wants to watch something that is boyish and generally too old for him and my youngest just wants to watch princesses and girl focused movies. I don’t want them watching movies that involve spirits, zombies, ghosts and other surreal characters.

Appropriate movies for younger kids. It's hard to find good movies for the little ones because it needs to hold their interest and hopefully the adults too without being too aggressive or scary.

Movies For Young Kids

This list is in no particular order, just the order in which we have reviewed it.

I am going to continuously update it so be sure to check in every now and again.

The List of Recommended Movies For Younger Kids

Appropriate movies for younger kids has to include the old Mary Poppins - not Mary Poppins returns!!

1. Mary Poppins

The original. Not the second one.

You can read the full review of the Original Mary Poppins here. Or, if you want to know why not the second one, you can watch the Mary Poppins Returns review here. Mary Poppins returns is the second movie, the most recent one with Emily Blunt.

2. Charlie Brown and Snoopy: The Peanuts Movie

This is such a great movie!!

The Peanuts Movie is probably the sweetest movie on this list! This is the most recent Charlie Brown and Snoopy movie. I can’t recommend this movie enough. It is packed with themes of kindness and generosity.

But poor old Charlie Brown, he is such a klutz!

You can read the Peanuts Movie Review here.

Sing! has to be one of the great movies for younger kids.

3. Sing!

This is one of my daughter’s favourite movies. She has (incorrectly) memorised all the words to the songs. We even have the soundtrack in the car!

You can read the full Sing! review here.

4. The Bee Movie

Jerry Seinfeld’s contribution to children’s movies isn’t half bad! Once you know it’s Jerry Seinfeld you can’t actually sense him in it. The self-entitlement of the bee is there but what is interesting is how the character is forced to take responsibility for his actions.

The Bee Movie has no scary scenes which makes it one of the few movies I’ve seen that is completely free of this.

You can read the whole Bee Movie review here.

Paddington 2 is a great movie for younger kids. It is way more appropriate than the first Paddington Movie!

5. Paddington 1 and 2

If your kids are little still I would suggest that you watch Paddington 2 first.

Paddington 1 is lovely but Nicole Kidman, the baddie is very very real and scary. You can read the full Paddington 1 Review Here.

Paddington 2 has all the charm and sweetness of the first. It is as visually bright and engaging with the same lovey characters. Thankfully, Hugh Grant isn’t as scary. You can read our review of Paddington 2 Here.

6. Alice in Wonderland

I’m talking about the old school original.

I watched this years and years ago and loved it. All the long songs and Alice’s adventures. Now my kids love it and watch it all the time.

This movie is just very long so you may want to split it into 2 watching sessions.

You can read the full review of Alice in Wonderland Here.

Up! One of our recommended movies for younger kids

7. UP!

I cry everytime I watch this movie and my kids think it’s hilarious.

This is the only movie to feature on this list and the our list of Movies to Make you Cry thankfully most kids can’t understand why it’s sad or appreciate that form of emotion so early on in the movie so you don’t have to worry about them crying – it will only be you.

You can read the full review of UP! here.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is another of the old movies my kids love. Had to include it on the good movies for younger kids.

8. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

This is another one of the old school movies.

I still am surprised at how often my kids watch this. They really love it. I’m not sure why. Thankfully, it’s very tame and there is nothing to worry about because it is so old.

I was going to put the link to the review here but I’ve just realised that I haven’t written the review. I had better get on to that!

9. Boss Baby

This is another of my daughter’s absolute favourites. I’m not sure she follows the plot though…

The little baby arrives and everything changes. Except this baby is actually management. It’s really sweet how the relationship between the two boys develops but there are some emotional concerns that have been voiced.

For all the details, check out the full review of Boss Baby Here.

Nanny McPhee is a great character but movie wise - the second movie is definitely better for kids than the first one.

10. Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

This is one of those movies where the second is better than the first.

This is the sequel to the first Nanny McPhee movie and it is much better. The first one is a little bit dark because the father is an undertaker. Now my kids didn’t understand that but I definitely don’t want them cottoning on to the idea. I wouldn’t recommended letting younger kids watch the first Nanny McPhee!
