Public House in Albury – best place to eat between Sydney and Melbourne

If you’re stopping to eat in Albury – don’t stop anywhere else other than Public House!

With lots of space, good food and a really smart interior why would you stop anywhere else on your trip between Sydney and Melbourne.

It’s touted as a pub on its website but it’s so much better than what you would expect of a pub!!

And the bathrooms are nice too! Such a welcome relief on a road trip!

Public House, Albury

I asked and asked all the people I knew and people I didn’t know on Facebook forums where we should stop on the way to Bendigo. Resounding silence.

Not a lot of people have had good experiences in this part of New South Wales when it comes to eating on a road trip. Even we often just give up and eat take out. Argh!

This time I was insistent that the kids have a decent lunch. Cue Albury.

If there is a food landmark in Albury, this has to be it. I can’t imagine you get better food anywhere else in Albury.

If you're on a road trip between Sydney and Melbourne or just stopping to eat in Albury - don't stop anywhere else other than Public House!

Where is Public House

Public House is on what I assume is one of the main streets in Albury. This does however mean you have to drive into the town.

The official address is 491 Dean Street, Albury, 2640.

Put that address into your GPS now, you’ll need it one day!

What we ate

I can’t eat a lot of a road trip. Either because I don’t like feeling all full or because I eat too much rubbish all along the drive. So I had a starter – the bruschetta.

It was delicious. Home made Bruschetta topped with Prosciutto, Bocconcini, tomato and basil with a balsamic glaze.

The kids had tomato and basil pasta – a massive serving. Which my husband wanted desperately too.

My husband had the burger and I ate half of it after not wanting anything because it was so good. That chef sure knows how to make a good burger patty.

The Public House in Albury has to be the best place to eat between Sydney and Melbourne or if you just happen to be in Albury. With or without the kids!

Why have we stopped at Maccas previously when this gem was hidden in Albury!?

Just be sure to check out their menu online as it does change seasonally.

And when it came to drinks my husband wanted some random concoction so the owner googled it and had it made up for him. How is that for service!!

We’re driving down to Falls Creek from Sydney in 6 months time and we will most definitely be stopping at Public House again!

In and out

There are lots of different spaces and areas to sit in which are different from one another. Whether you’re there for drinks or a long lunch or a stop over, like us, with the kids then there is a spot for you.

Front of house it’s very much like a smart pub with the big bar and comfy booths along the far wal

I would have like to sit outside in the sun and watch the street life but it is popular so we headed to the back where the kids could move around and make some noise.

There is also a beautiful area with couches and natural light streaming and in another situation I would have been there with a cocktail for sure.

Family friendly

Yes, it is family friendly. We sat right at the back of the restaurant and there were two other families with young kids.

There is a kids menu and the kids were given colouring in sheets and crayons on arrival.

Bathrooms

As I said above, the bathrooms are great. They’re lovely big bathrooms, stylish and clean. My daughter even commented on how she liked them.
