Possum Magic – one of the great Australian children’s books

Possum Magic

No surprises that Possum Magic in one of the books on the NSW Premier Reading Challenge Booklist. It is a quitessential Australian book. Not only is the Possum an Australian creature but the little possum and her grandma eat all sorts of Australia food throughout the book.

This is another book that my kids absolutely love.

This magic book has been around for 35 years.

Book 13 of the PRC: Possum Magic

My kids absolutely love Possum Magic. Although the debates about what the opposite of invisible is drive my husband insane! Mr 5 is convinced that the opposite of invisble is “unvisable”. I now have concerns that he may be missing the whole point of the book…

Children's Book Review: Possum Magic. This is another of the Australian books that my children absolutely love. In this post, you can find out more about the plot, age suitability and why we're reading it.

The Plot

Little possum Hush has gone invisible. Her Grandma Poss did it to her, in order to try keep Little Possum safe from the dangers of the Australian Bush. But now Little Hush is desperate to see herself again.
The secret to making Hush visible again is in an Australian food but Grandma Poss can’t remember what it is… How typical of a granny to forget 🙂

The story follows the two as they search for the secret to making Hush visible again.

The Book Itself

Possum Magic is a great way to introduce children to Australian animals and the various landscapes that exist in Australia.

It is also helpful for kids learning to read as it is a simple story without too many diversions and it has a rhythm to it which I understand helps kids get used to reading.

New to Australia?

If you’re new to Australia and want a great Australian book to make your children become a bit more familiar with it, this is one of the books to buy. I would also look at getting I’m Australian Too and if you’re in Sydney, Alphabetical Sydney.

This is a great book for little kids all the way through to older school going children aged 5 or 6.

Various versions of Possum Magic

Possum Magic comes in various shapes and guises so make sure you’re getting the right copy. You want the original book, not the baby book or the shapes and colours book. The original was a soft cover almost A4 size book.

If you don’t know about the NSW Premier Reading Challenge, it is an initiative by the department of education to promote literacy and reading. It is not a competition!

There is an extensive list of books on the website from which you choose the number of books you have to read. We have to read 30 because my son is in the K – Year 2 Challenge.
Once we read our book we add it to our booklist and if we get to 30 we get a certificate from the Premier.

You can find out more from the NSW PRC Website.
