Paddington 2

Paddington 2: even better than it’s prequel.

Paddington 1 was lovely. But, Paddington 2 is, in my opinion, so much better than Paddington 1.  As with the first, the colours are so bright and its beautifully filmed and Paddington himself is true to character. In this movie the plot is brilliant and isn’t as scary as the first.

I had to beg my children to watch it with me initially. Of course, they watched it without me the first time and I only got around to watching it with them the third time they saw it. Thank goodness for streaming and not having to constantly go and rent the same DVD.

You don’t need to have watched Paddington 1 to watch this movie so you can skip straight ahead to this one.

Paddington 2

The Plot

Paddington 2 starts off from Paddington 1, Paddington is living with the Browns and has become part of their family. Aunty Lucy, Paddington’s grandmother is turning 100 and Paddington wants to buy her a very special present. He spots a pop-up book in Mr Gruber’s store and starts saving to be able to get it for his grandmother.

Before Paddington has saved up enough, a thief breaks into Mr Grubers and steals the book. Paddington happens to be on the scene the same time as the thief and the police arrest him thinking that he is responsible for the theft.

Poor Paddington is found guilty of the theft and sent to jail. In jail he slowly begins to make friends, despite accidentally having dyed all the prison uniforms pink.

The story follows Paddington’s experiences and the Brown’s attempt to find the thief.

The Positives

There are no real educational aspects to this movie. It’s just a lovely story told in a beautiful way. I really love the imagery in both the Paddington movies.

Paddington is always kind and respectful and he carries these traits with him to prison. He is constantly reminding the other jail birds what Aunt Lucy says. What is positive is the transformation in the naughty prisoners and how they begin to soften and become more respectable.

Scary Scenes

Yes, there is a baddy, played by Hugh Grant, but he is nowhere near as scary as Nicole Kidman was in the first.

Even though Paddington gets sent to jail, it is not scary at all. He really makes the most of his experience and makes everyone begin to love him.

The scariest scene of all has to be when Paddington almost drowns towards the end of the movie. You will know that this is coming up when the cast is all on the train trying to stop Hugh Grant.

Age Suitability

My three year old and six year old both love this movie. I think it would be suitable for younger kids even but they probably would not follow the plot.
