Luna Park Sydney

Luna Park Sydney

My kids are made about Luna Park Sydney. We’ve spent hours upon hours there. And everytime we leave they ask when we will be back next. They are so adept at spotting it that if they see the “big face” anywhere they’ll ask about when we can visit.

Luna Park is Iconic Sydney!

There are a few things you need to be aware of if you are planning a visit like how to get there, when it is open and what is good for kids.

Where is Luna Park

Luna Park is diagonally opposite Sydney Opera House, on the other side of the water and the bridge. It’s on the edge of Sydney’s North Shore looking towards the City.

It is right on the water’s edge which adds to its appeal.

The official address for Luna Park is 1 Olympic Drive, Milson’s Point.

How to get to Luna Park

There are plenty of ways to get to Luna Park and the easiest depends on where you are coming from.

By ferry

This is probably the easiest way to get to Luna Park if you are in the City.  There is a Wharf right outside the Park. Just make sure you check on the website that there are no issues with the Ferries before you visit.

The Wharf you are aiming for is Milsons Point Wharf.

By train

Coming from Sydney’s North Shore the train is probably the best transport to take.

From Milsons Point station, it’s an easy five minute walk to Luna Park. Milsons Point station is only one stop from the CBD and is on both the ‘Northern Line’ and ‘North Shore and Western Line’.

By car

Luna Park has carpark right underneath the park. There is plenty of parking and the lift from the parking brings you right up into the park. In terms of ease, this is one of the easiest ways to get to Luna Park however it is pricey. It is actually the most expensive way to get to the park considering that parking for 3 – 4 hours is $33 and 4+ hours is $39.

The entrance to the car park is on Paul Street, just off Alfred St South, Milsons Point.

Luna Park Features for Kids – how to get the most of your visit

If you buy the unlimited rides ticket then, as the name suggests, you get to go on all the rides. There are enough rides for you and your kids to spend 3 hours or more at the park.

My kids have their favourite rides so I will share those with you so you know what to look out for and how to best manage your time when you visit. I will do them in the order of how you walk through the park.

A side note first, if you are visiting with children 3 and under and no older kids, it would be best to walk all the way through the park to Coney Island and then to the small kids area behind Coney Island.  The latter is where you will find all the little rides for the younger kids.

The Carousel

My daughter loves the Carousel at Luna Park. It takes her ages to choose which horse she will go on.

With her being on a red ticket, it means that her and I both have to share a horse so we have to have a double saddle one.

Even my six year old will go on the Carousel a few times.

The Ferris Wheel

This is another of my 3 year olds favourites. I also love it.

What I like about this Ferris Wheel is the view, it is absolutely stunning at the top. You get 40 meters up and have a great view of the harbour, the Bridge and Opera House.

The Ferris Wheel does a couple of loops round so you do get some good time on it.

Now my son hates the Ferris Wheel. I think a large portion is an act but it does stop at the top sometimes to let other people get off and on and that set him off the first time he went on it. Suffice to say, he will not go on it again.

The Dodgems

Both kids love the dodgems and always have. Now it scares me a little to put small kids in the dodgems because I worry about their necks and backs if they get knocked by another dodgem but we always have an adult sitting with them and we try to avoid any impacts. It is possible. Just go slow and stay on the edge.

You will have to queue for this one, there is always a queue because it is so popular. And it gets hot in the queue so just make sure the kids have their water bottles on them.

Red and Green Tickets need an adult to go with them on theses.

Coney Island

After the small kids area at the back of the park, this is our second favourite place to spend time.

Coney Island is right at the end of the main section of Luna Park.

Here there are plenty of things for the kids to do.

We love:

  • The Wonky Walk. Its short walk down the side of the hall where the floors move, wind comes out of nowhere and you struggle to keep upright. It’s not difficult but it is great fun.
  • The Mirror Maze (there was nothing funnier than dad getting lost in the maze and then we left him there).
  • Barrels of Fun. You have to try get through a moving barrel.

The Slides in the Hall are also AWESOME. If your child is on the adventurous side then they will definitely want to do this.  You will just have to go down in the sack with them. There is a very embarrassing video on Instagram of me screaming the whole way down.

Luna Park Sydney does not end with Coney Island, there are more great rides right behind it.

Once you come out of Coney Island, walk towards the water and you will see that there are steps going under the building, walking down those or down the ramp adjacent to those will take you to another set of great rides for kids.

The Rockin Tub

On our last visit I could not get my six year old off this ride. All he wanted to do was ride this over and over again. Essentially it is a tug boat that rocks from side to side, up and down and then turns around. For someone who hates the ferris wheel and those rotating cups I was amazed that he loved this.

At one stage I went on it. I only did it once. I did not enjoy it at all 🙂

The smaller kids rides

This is the section my daughter spends the most time at. There are a number of rides that are perfect for her size.

  • U-drive: this is a bunch of little cars on a track that the kids can pretend to drive.
  • Crazy Car Tea pots: the kids equivalent of spinning cups
  • Whirly Wheel: a little ferris wheel that the kids can sit in. A really little ferris wheel.

This area also has a haunted house, one of those upside down rides for adults and spinning rides.

Ride Closures

There are also times when certain rides are closed. For example, on a Sunday the Ferris Wheel closes early for a special event. It closes at 4pm every Sunday from 14 October 2018 to 18 March 2019.

For details on other rides that may be closed, here is the relevant website page.

Some rides inside Coney Island require closed shoes to ride or play on.

Opening Hours and Tickets

Opening Hours

The opening hours are generally the same BUT if there is a function the park may be closed or open at different times. It is important you check the opening times on their website before you visit.

Monday to Thursday 10am to 6pm
Friday and Saturday 10am to 11pm
Sunday 10am to 9pm

Tickets

You don’t need a ticket if you just want to walk through.

Before you buy your tickets find out if there are any rides that are closed or closing early.

All tickets are priced and sold according to height.

These are the prices at the gate without any form of discount. You can get better prices online and there are often deals online.

Red 85cm – 105cm (this is my 3 year old)  $25
Green:  106cm – 129cm (this is my 6 year old)  $45
Yellow (Adult) 130+ cm   $55

The kids will most need a paying adult to go on some of the rides with them like the dodgem, carousel and ferris wheel.

Special Events at Luna park

Luna Park Sydney has a number of special events on during the year. I think the most well known is Halloween. But there are a number of things happening at the Park. Last year we did Chinese New Year at Luna Park.

Two tips for special events at Luna Park

If you’re thinking about heading into Luna Park for one of its special events then check out the options online first. I know for Chinese New Year you could get a $5 food voucher if you bought tickets online.

Be sure to keep you eyes open when you get inside for other specials. I didn’t notice until I got home but the fortune cookie we were given included one free game. Had I known that I wouldn’t have had tears during the evening… We’re all learning!

Did you know that at Luna Park Sydney you don’t pay for tickets to walk through. You can go for a stroll during the day or evening and not pay any entrance cost.
