A Squash and a Squeeze – one of Julia Donaldson’s best

A Squash and a Squeeze

A Squash and a Squeeze is one of our children’s favourite books. Both children recite it almost perfectly as their dad reads it to them at night, they have heard it that many times.

A Squash and a Squeeze is one of our favourite Julia Donaldson books. When we saw it was on the NSW Premier Reading Challenge list I had to add it to our booklist because I knew we would be reading it anyway.

If you or your kids are a Julia Donaldson fan, you must look at adding this to your home library.

Book 7 of the PRC: A Squash and a Squeeze

 The Plot

A Squash and a squeeze is the story of a little old lady who complains to a wise old man that her house is just too small for her. The wise old man tells her to take in her animals one by one.

Eventually her and all her animals are squashed into her little house. This creates absolute havoc. The little old lady goes back to the wise old man to complain again. He tells her to take her animals out and all of a sudden her house feels ginormous.

Behind it all the moral of the story is to be grateful with what you have.

The Book Itself

Not only is this a typical Julia Donaldson with rhyming words and an easy reading style but the pictures are from Alex Scheffler. Alex Scheffler is an awesome illustrator, his pictures are bright and happy. When him and Julia Donaldson get together, you know you’re in for a great book.

We started reading these books when my kids were young so we often tried to buy the board books when we could. A Squash and a Squeeze does come as a board book or as an A4 soft cover book. There is also a sticker book and even a CD.

Our booklist

At this stage of the challenge, we have also read: Check on Me, Guess How Much I Love You, The Cat in the Hat. For more details on each book and in order to help you decide whether you want to add it to your list, just click on the name of the book and it should take you to the full review.

NSW Premier Reading Challenge

If you don’t know about the NSW Premier Reading Challenge, it is an initiative by the department of education to promote literacy and reading. It is not a competition!

There is an extensive list of books on the website from which you choose the number of books you have to read. We have to read 30 because my son is in the K – Year 2 Challenge.

Once we read our book we add it to our booklist and if we get to 30 we get a certificate from the Premier.

You can find out more from the NSW PRC Website.
